In very few industries are mechanics, electronics, software and logistics so powerfully intertwined as in the automotive industry. This is reflected in the current dynamics involved in developing drive concepts for road vehicles and will only be furthered in self-driving vehicles, a concept that already has a long lineage in rail vehicles. Higher energy densities in automotive batteries and the establishing of efficient and widely available charging infrastructure are technical challenges on an even par with increasingly extensive combustion exhaust aftertreatment considerations. Or will perhaps yet another alternative drive concept based on fuel cells become the generally accepted standard? At the same time, there is immense economic pressure on the road and rail industry which is fueling further advances in traditional drives, undercarriage structures, chassis and interiors.
